From Mom to Mompreneur: The Intersection of Motherhood and Entrepreneurship

As a mom of 5, I think it’s safe to say that being a mom is a full-time job! However, many moms these days are also juggling the responsibilities of entrepreneurship. I began my full-time mom to mompreneur journey back in 2014. I know firsthand how challenging and rewarding this path can be. Mompreneurship is a dynamic and ever-evolving field that combines the roles of motherhood and entrepreneurship. It’s a unique blend of managing a family while running a successful business. We are often driven by the desire to create a better work-life balance for ourselves and our families. We are a special breed of entrepreneurs who are constantly innovating and adapting to find creative solutions to balance our personal and professional lives.

I am passionate about empowering moms to be successful, healthy and free in their life.

My way of contributing in a positive way to your journey is by sharing my own experiences and teaching you what I’ve learned. It is my hope that this series, we’ll explore what mompreneurship is, the unique challenges and benefits that come with it, and some tips for how to succeed as a mompreneur.

Defining Mompreneurship

We often start our businesses from home, which allows us to have more control over our schedules and work around our children’s needs. We are able to attend school functions, doctor’s appointments, and other family obligations without worrying about taking time off from work. Starting a business from home also reduces the overhead costs associated with running a business, such as office rent, utilities, and commuting expenses.

Mompreneurship can take many different forms, and the opportunities are only limited by our imagination and skills. Many mompreneurs start online businesses, selling products or services in various niches such as fashion, beauty, wellness, or home decor. Others may offer consulting or coaching services in their area of expertise, leveraging their knowledge and skills to help others succeed. Still, others may launch a brick-and-mortar business that can be managed from home, such as a daycare, a home bakery, or a pet grooming service.

Regardless of the type of business we run, mompreneurs are a valuable asset to the entrepreneurial ecosystem. We bring a unique perspective and skill set to the table and are often able to find a balance between our personal and professional lives that eludes many others. Mompreneurship is an exciting and rewarding journey, and with the right mindset, tools, and resources, we can build a legacy that will benefit our family for generations to come.

Challenges and Benefits of Mompreneurship

I’ll be the first to tell you that being a mompreneur comes with unique challenges and benefits. On the one hand, being a mompreneur means having the freedom and flexibility to work from home and set your own schedule. This can be a huge advantage when it comes to balancing work and family responsibilities.

On the other hand, being a mompreneur also means having to juggle two full-time jobs at once. There may be days when you have to work late into the night or wake up extra early to get everything done. Balancing the demands of motherhood and entrepreneurship can be a challenge, but it’s also incredibly rewarding.

One of the biggest benefits of mompreneurship is the ability to be your own boss. As a mompreneur, you have the freedom to pursue your passions and build a business that reflects your values and interests. You also have the potential to earn more money than you might in a traditional 9-to-5 job.

Tips for Succeeding as a Mompreneur

If you’re considering becoming a mompreneur, here are a few tips to help you succeed:

Get organized: Being a mompreneur requires careful planning and organization. Create a schedule that works for you and your family, and stick to it as best you can. Use tools like calendars, to-do lists, and project management software to keep track of your tasks and deadlines. With the many hats I wear, I run my empire using Evernote, Trello, and Google Calendar. There is definitely more to running my businesses and household than these 3, however, they are the foundational tools that help me stay organized, focused and productive.

Invest in yourself: As a mompreneur, it’s important to continue learning and growing. Take courses, attend conferences, and read books to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and best practices in your industry. My daily routine includes listening to an audible book for at least 1 hour per day, taking a class and watching a video that keeps me knowledgeable about what’s going on in the business world. This does take discipline to maintain, however, after some time, it becomes a natural part of your day.

Build a support network: Being a mompreneur can be isolating at times, so it’s important to have a support network of other mompreneurs who understand what you’re going through. I accomplish this by joining online communities, attending local meetups, and connecting with other mompreneurs in my area.

Delegate and outsource: As your business grows, you may find that you can’t do everything on your own. Consider delegating some tasks to employees or outsourcing to freelancers or contractors. This will free up your time to focus on the things that only you can do. Platforms like Fiverr, Upwork, or even your local university are great places to post job opportunities.

Is Mompreneurship For You?

Mompreneurship is not for the faint of heart. It requires dedication, discipline, and a willingness to take risks. However, the rewards of building a successful business while also being there for your family are immeasurable. As a mompreneur, you’ll have the opportunity to create something meaningful and impactful while also being a role model for your children and showing them what’s possible.

If you’re a mom who’s interested in entrepreneurship, there’s never been a better time to start. With the rise of technology and the internet, it’s easier than ever to launch and grow a business from the comfort of your own home. However, to be successful, you’ll need to have a unique set of skills and strategies.

One of the most important skills you’ll need as a mompreneur is organization. With so many responsibilities on your plate, it’s essential to have a system for managing your time and tasks. This might involve using a planner, setting priorities, and breaking down large projects into smaller, more manageable tasks.

Investing in yourself is another key aspect of mompreneurship. This can involve taking courses or workshops to learn new skills, hiring a coach or mentor to guide you, or simply taking time to focus on your own personal development and well-being. Remember, you are the foundation of your business, and investing in yourself is an investment in your business.

Building a support network is also crucial for mompreneurs. This can include family and friends who can help with childcare or other tasks, as well as other mompreneurs who can offer advice, support, and encouragement. Joining online communities, attending networking events, and reaching out to other mompreneurs in your industry can all be great ways to build your support network.

Finally, delegating and outsourcing can be a game-changer for mompreneurs. This might involve hiring a virtual assistant to handle administrative tasks, outsourcing your bookkeeping or marketing, or simply asking for help when you need it. Remember, you don’t have to do it all alone – there’s no shame in asking for help.
